Spiritual Boyfriends is a solo work which revolves around body-power relationships and structures.
Spirituality and specifically the practice of yoga is the contextual framework used in the perfomance to question policies of power and disciplined bodies.
The practice of yoga is revealed as a form of self-control and self-discipline to the point of reversing its healing / spiritual purpose to an unhealthy, materialistic obsession with body perfection. Yoga today, despite being a spiritual practice, does not escape the capitalization of the body through concepts such as beauty, health and the fetish object industry that revolve around self-therapy. The concepts mentioned are imposed and exploited economically by macro advertising structures, which infiltrate into our private lives by building micro power structures that operate through emotional / personal relationships.
Digitality is questioned as a space of desire, but also of control, as a drug and as a collective psychotropic, where the soul (understood on the Internet as a volatile, virtual, informative entity) is freed from the materiality of body and can observe, touch and manipulate in a ubiquitous and invisible way. What role does the Internet play in relation to the divine, immateriality, love, power, neoliberal policies and their techniques of social control and surveillance?
The work is based on an iconographic research about the historical construction of yoga postures as well as autobiographical material around affection and desire.
Premiered July 2020, 22nd, 23rd. Festival Grec Barcelona

“In Spirituals Boyfriends, beats an interesting exposition about the meanings linked to postures and gestures, or about the relationship between body and meaning, between certain social poses and the gaze we put on them, between the spirituality of the body and the commodification of any kind of significance. The body is erotic, and power has a lot of eroticism”

“We were looking forward to this new title after the hit "Likes." And patience has been amply rewarded. This could be the second part of a thesis built on articles specializing in anthropology of contemporary world culture. With two important contributions: on the discussion of the position of the researcher and on the body as a catalog of the new reality. But let no one be confused: she is a dancer first and foremost. So, despite the good plot anchorage and the deployment she makes of it, it’s when she talks with the movement that she determines the final meaning of the piece.“

“Guiu talks about yoga. Yes. And from there, on how the position of our body conditions the image that others have of us. It does so from a measured radicalism, which means that the show can be easily deciphered for anyone of any age. As well as paving the way for future generations of women who are still struggling with their bodies. She explores it and exposes it without mania. Don’t be afraid, she tells them.”
